Is the energy audit free?
That’s a question we hear often, especially since some online information refers to “free” or “no-cost” energy assessments. While assessments are often described as “incentivized,” the service itself is not free — someone always carries the cost, either upfront or while an incentive is applied.
If applicable, eligible utility customers may choose to complete a third-party authorization form that allows the utility’s incentivized audit portion to be applied directly toward the assessment cost. In that case, the homeowner is responsible only for any amount above the utility’s incentivized rebate. We explain pricing clearly before scheduling so expectations are aligned.
What specialized tests can be performed as part of a Project Probono energy audit?
- Multi-Point Blower Door Testing: This test uses a calibrated fan(s) to create a pressure difference across the entire home’s shell, measuring total air leakage — both infiltration (air entering) and exfiltration (air escaping). The results quantify how leaky the home is and help us prioritize air sealing measures.
Unchecked leakage not only affects comfort and indoor air quality — it also contributes to unnecessary heating and cooling costs year-round. - HVAC Duct Leakage Testing: Using specialized calibrated duct-testing equipment, we can measure total duct leakage and leakage to building cavities and/or outside of the building envelope. This testing quantifies exactly how much conditioned air is escaping or being mixed through unsealed duct systems and building cavities being used as duct pathways. Duct leakage can significantly reduce delivered heating and cooling performance, increase system runtime, worsen comfort issues, and contribute to dust and indoor air quality concerns.
- Zone-Specific Pressure Testing: By connecting into the blower door with reference to your home and to different zones, like attics, crawlspaces, and basements — we measure pressure differences between these areas and the outdoors. This helps to further diagnose and measure the air leaks within your home.
- Thermal and Fog imaging: Thermal imaging helps us pinpoint and spot surface-level temperature differences. Sometimes we go a step further by fogging specific zones. This technique makes hidden leakage points visible in real time and provides a dramatic, visual confirmation of air movement pathways. It's especially useful when validating pressure boundarie defects or when used with modeling software.
- HVAC Ductwork Pressure Mapping: We include pressure panning to map duct leakage and locate hidden return or supply losses. This test, combined with blower door pressure, helps identify air being pulled through wall chases, floor cavities, or disconnected ducts — issues that waste energy and reduce comfort.
- Combustion Appliance Zone (CAZ): This testing is included when homes have gas water heaters, furnaces, or boilers. This safety check ensures your appliances have adequate air supply to vent properly — especially important before air sealing or insulation work that could alter airflow.
Will I receive a report after the audit?
Yes — after your audit, we generate a proprietary, home performance energy report that reflects your home's diagnostic test results and retrofit potential. It’s not boilerplate — it’s built around what we verify onsite, testing data. Your home performance report is secured with a private password, and remains non-static so it can evolve with your project as upgrades are completed.
Do you provide Pennsylvania blower door testing for code compliance—and help if the home doesn’t pass?
This standalone service is often required for new homes, major renovations, or to meet Pennsylvania energy code compliance (typically 3 ACH50 or better). We provide testing for builders, HVAC contractors, architects, and homeowners needing fast, accurate results and certification.
Our testing includes:
- Envelope tightness verification using calibrated blower door equipment
- Detailed reporting with ACH50 calculations, pass/fail status, and corrective guidance
- Flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends when weather permits
- Optional re-test discounts if additional sealing is needed prior to final signoff
- PASS Option (Pressure-Assisted Sealing Service) ~For homes that don’t meet the target, we can quickly diagnose and deliver targeted air sealing using live blower door feedback and specialized equipment — helping you reach compliance the same day without rescheduling.
Take Advantage of Local Utility Rebates
Utility Rebates · Enhance Efficiency · Cut Costs
Homeowners throughout the Lehigh Valley and our neighboring areas may qualify for generous rebates on energy upgrades through PPL Electric’s Home Energy Assessment Program and the UGI Save Smart Program. These incentives are designed to reduce upfront costs and reward improvements that lower energy waste and increase comfort. Below is a breakdown of current rebate opportunities based on your utility provider and the upgrade type. Need help navigating eligibility? We’ll walk you through it.
Air Sealing – PPL Program
PPL offers up to $200 back when our professional air sealing is completed through the Home Energy Assessment Program. This generous rebate supports whole-home leakage reduction efforts that improve comfort, boost HVAC efficiency, stop waste and prepare the home for attic insulation upgrades.
$ 200 Off
Attic Insulation – PPL Program
PPL will cover 75% of the cost, up to $500, when attic insulation is upgraded to recommended levels as part of a Home Energy Assessment. This rebate applies to homes that improve thermal coverage after air sealing and achieve verified R-value improvements.
$ 500 Off
Basement & Crawlspace Insulation
PPL covers 75% of the cost, up to $500, when basement or crawlspace insulation is professionally installed as part of the Home Energy Assessment Program. This applies to rim joists, perimeter walls, and crawlspace enclosures that improve the pressure and thermal boundary.
$ 500 Off
Heat Pump Water Heater (ENERGY STAR®)
PPL customers can receive a $400 rebate for installing a qualified ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heater. These systems are highly efficient and can significantly reduce electric water heating costs over time.
$ 400 Off
Attic Insulation – UGI Save Smart
