Measuring Home Efficiency Under Pressure

A blower door test begins by setting up a temporary frame in one of your home’s exterior doorways and sealing it with an airtight panel. A high-powered fan is mounted in the panel, and precision pressure gauges—called manometers—are connected with hoses to measure airflow.

This setup allows us to calculate how much air your home exchanges with the outdoors every minute, revealing how tightly sealed (or leaky) the structure really is.

By lowering the air pressure inside, we simulate real-world wind and weather conditions. As outdoor air rushes in through leaks, we pinpoint exactly where air is entering—through gaps, cracks, and hidden openings. These leaks directly affect your home’s comfort, energy efficiency, and HVAC performance.

Precision Under Pressure

Once the equipment is set up and the home is ready for testing, a powerful calibrated fan is mounted in an exterior door frame. This fan lowers the air pressure inside the home, making it lower than the air pressure outside. As this happens, outdoor air rushes in through every accessible opening—seams, cracks, plumbing penetrations, electrical outlets, wall plates, and any other pathway where air can freely flow.

This is where the real diagnostics begin.
By depressurizing your home, we simulate a high-wind event—putting your building envelope under stress, just like extreme weather would. During this pressure test, we pair live thermal imaging and indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring to expose comfort issues, energy losses, and performance weaknesses in real time.

Once the testing is complete and all site-specific data is collected, we analyze the results using advanced energy modeling software. From this, we generate customized reports that clearly outline where your home is losing energy and how we can help you improve efficiency, comfort, and cost savings.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

A blower door test tells us how “tight” or “leaky” your home’s building envelope really is. Using controlled conditions—specifically 50 pascals (Pa) of pressure, which simulates the effect of sustained winds exerting pressure on the skin of your home—we measure how much outside air infiltrates through cracks, gaps, and other hidden openings.

This airflow is first measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM50)—how many cubic feet of air move through the home per minute at 50 Pa. From there, we calculate ACH50:
Air Changes per Hour at 50 pascals.

ACH50 = How Often Your Home’s Air Gets Replaced

This number tells us how many times the entire volume of air inside your home is replaced by outside air every hour, under the test pressure of 50 Pa.

For example:

  • ACH50 of 8.0 = your home’s air changes out every 7.5 minutes
  • ACH50 of 4.0 = every 15 minutes
  • ACH50 of 2.0 = every 30 minutes

The higher the number, the leakier the home.
The lower the number, the tighter and more energy-efficient it is.
